A word From Franklin International
No good company rests on its laurels. And Franklin International is no different. We at Franklin are deeply committed to continuously advancing adhesive technology to provide you and your customers the best possible solutions.

Our dedication to research and development is especially apparent this year. In the Spring, we introduced the new generation of Titebond® glue, Titebond® III Ultimate Wood Glue. The first water-based glue to pass ANSI/HPVA Type I water-resistance specification and offer a one-year shelf life, Titebond® III is taking the industry by storm. Now, we are preparing to announce another product evolution - a new version of our HIPURformer™ Polyurethane Advanced Bonding System. To be unveiled at IWF in August, the new version is an advancement in technology that offers your customers increased performance and reliability.

Complementing our focus on research and development is our strong emphasis on technical service. Franklin operates a large team of technical service experts to enable you and your customers to maximize the value of our products. We proudly introduce our unique technical service program and expert technicians in this issue of The Common Bond.

In the end, we need a strong distribution channel, with dedicated partners like you, to get even our most advanced products into the hands of our mutual customers. Thank you for your continued support of Titebond® and other Franklin products.

As always, we welcome your comments on this newsletter and all else at Franklin.

  Regards,
  Nate Miles

Franklin Introduces an Advanced Version of HiPURformer Top
HiPURformer Polyurethane advanced Bonding System Something new is waiting within the original HiPURformer™ carrying case: an advanced version of Franklin's innovative HiPURformer™ Polyurethane Advanced Bonding System.

The new HiPURformer™ introduces several significant design features to provide your customers with maximum system reliability and performance. The two most exciting additions are Franklin's patent-pending FLX-Valve™ technology and a sturdy new adhesive applicator, engineered for durability and smooth, dependable delivery of adhesive.

The FLX-Valve™ is an innovative check valve that provides multiple benefits. Located in the base of the cartridge tip, the valve is made of a supple silicone material and is designed to permit easy, controlled extrusion of adhesive. It keeps air and moisture away from the moisture-cure contents of the cartridge, ensuring initial and repeat use of the 50-gram cartridge until it is completely empty. Additionally, the FLX-Valve™ prevents drooling of adhesive in the cartridge, eliminating waste and mess.

Also debuting with the new HiPURformer™ Polyurethane Advanced Bonding System is a redesigned adhesive applicator. The applicator enables a heightened level of convenience, durability and reliability in the HiPURformer™ system. The new design reduces the number of strokes required to empty an adhesive cartridge in half, from 22 to 11, providing steady, even flow. Reinforced components and tough construction materials ensure long-term reliability even under the most rigorous shop conditions.

With a modernized body design and silver-colored accents, the new applicator looks as good as it performs.

The new HiPURformer™ retains many of the original features that have made it so popular among woodworkers: Lightweight applicator, cordless operation, short heat-up time (12 minutes), and a 20-minute usage time before reheating is required.

The kit also includes the original three polyurethane reactive hot melt adhesive formulas, with set times ranging from 30 to 75 seconds. A new multi-purpose formula with an extended 5 minute set time (MP300) will be introduced in the fall of 2004.

For additional information about the new HiPURformer™ Polyurethane Advanced Bonding System, please contact your Franklin salesperson.

Titebond III Tops Polyurethane Glue Top
Titebond III Ultimate Wood Glue With the introduction of Titebond® III Ultimate Wood Glue, many of your customers likely will be wondering how this waterproof product compares against polyurethane glues. Franklin compared its newest woodworking glue against polyurethane glue and confirmed that Titebond® III actually performs better than polyurethane in many aspects important to the woodworker.

While polyurethane glues offer longer open time, are more versatile and require less total cure time, Titebond® III offers eight key advantages over polyurethanes:
  • More strength. Rigorous in-house testing found Titebond® III to be significantly stronger than polyurethane glues in wood-to-wood applications.
  • Waterproof. Only Titebond® III passes ANSI/HPVA Type I testing for water-resistance.
  • Water cleanup. Unlike polyurethane glue, Titebond® III can be cleaned up with water.
  • Safer. Titebond® III is solvent-free and FDA-approved for indirect food contact.
  • Easier-to- use. Titebond® III doesn't require gloves and doesn't stain skin.
  • Less clamp time. Titebond® III requires only 30 minutes of clamp time.
  • Foam-free. Titebond® III doesn't foam during curing.
  • Better Value. Titebond® III is nearly ½ the price of polyurethanes with similar spread rates.

Your customers will likely find Titebond® III to be the safer, better alternative for exterior wood projects requiring maximum strength and water resistance.

Woodworkers Bonding With Titebond III Top
Titebond® III - the first leading-brand, water-based, waterproof glue - is making a big splash in the woodworking industry.

Editors are praising the new product in key woodworking magazines. A few examples: Rob Johnstone, editor of in Woodworker's Journal Ezine, a newsletter e-mailed to over 200,000 subscribers, poses the rhetorical question: So what's so great about [Titebond® III]?" and answers, "Plenty." Steve Shanesy, editor and publisher of Popular Woodworking, gives the product its highest rating: five stars out of five. Mr. Shanesy compared the performance of three glues - interior-grade Elmer's Carpenter Wood Glue, Titebond® III and Gorilla Glue brand polyurethane - by running panels made with the glues through the dishwasher. Elmer's did not withstand even the first cycle, but both Titebond® III and Gorilla Glue survived all six cycles.* "The results were impressive," said Mr. Shanesy.

Sales of Titebond® III also are soaring beyond expectations. And Franklin expects sales to continue climbing with increased product awareness. Editors have indicated articles are planned for upcoming issues. In addition, Franklin has launched a heavy advertising campaign, which includes four-page advertorials in Woodworker's Journal, Popular Woodworking, American Woodworker and Wood Magazine and a full-page ad in these and seven other popular woodworking magazines.

We at Franklin are extremely proud of this, our most advanced woodworking glue yet, and we hope that we have delivered you a product you are just as pleased to provide your customers.

*In tests performed by Franklin subsequent to this experiment, Titebond® III actually held up better than the polyurethane glue after additional cycles.

Titebond 811 Advantage Urethane Wood Flooring Adhesive Franklin Gives Your Flooring Customers the Advantage...
Titebond 811 Advantage Urethane Adhesive

Franklin's new Titebond® 811 Advantage doesn't offer your flooring customers a single advantage. Rather, this urethane wood flooring adhesive offers them multiple advantages, especially over other urethane flooring adhesives. Titebond® 811 Advantage provides easier application, lower cost, quicker installation of wood parquet and engineered laminated plank wood flooring — all adding up to higher productivity for the flooring installer.

811 Advantage simplifies flooring installation from beginning to end. First, it combines the trowelling ease of a water-based adhesive with the strength of a polyurethane product. It also is visible when wet, making cleanup easier when installation is complete. Although designed to last the lifetime of the floor, 811 Advantage also lends itself to easier tear-outs and repairs down the road.

811 Advantage also is less expensive up front than traditional urethane adhesives. Then, initial value is increased through this new product's special "non-slump" formula. When an adhesive slumps, the trowelled adhesive ridge loses its form upon application, requiring the installer to apply more adhesive. Because it retains its ridges, 811 Advantage requires less adhesive per square foot.

The newest Titebond® flooring adhesive also enables faster installation than similar products. 811 Advantage contains no water and is 95 percent solids. This, along with the product's moisture-cure characteristics, enable the installer to save installation time by "wet laying" the adhesive, rather than "dry laying," or "flashing," it. The wet lay method enables your customer to begin laying wood flooring immediately after trowelling the adhesive, enabling him or her to finish the floor more quickly and move on to the next job.

Titebond® 811 Advantage is specifically designed for use with Titebond® 531 Epoxy Moisture Control System, which reduces 75 percent of vapor transmission from any concrete slab (up to 12 pounds).

Building Safety with Titebond® Radon Sealant Top
Titebond Radon Sealant Titebond® has introduced the ideal barricade against dangerous radon, lurking in soil around building foundations: new Titebond® Radon Sealant. Designed to reduce entry of this lung carcinogen through the foundation, the newest Titebond® sealant is a high-grade elastomeric acryclic formula that combines exceptional durability and flexibility - accommodating extension and compression of at least 25 percent with full, 100 percent recovery.

Titebond® Radon Sealant matches concrete foundations in color and provides protection against radon when applied on foundation cracks, joints and penetrations, around foundation coatings normally used for damp proofing, and membranes surrounding the foundation. Franklin also had the busy professional contractor in mind when developing the sealant, which is de-aired for a smooth, uniform bead; cleans up when wet; dries quickly, and can be painted and stained within only two to four hours of application.

Titebond® Radon Sealant also offers full assurance of conformation to ASTM C1193, ASTM C920, ASTM C834, ASTM D3273, and ASTM C3272.

VOC Report: Green Building Top
The construction industry is going green. Increasingly, materials used in buildings rising across the country must comply with some of the nation's strictest environmental regulations.

One organization leading the way in green building is the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Formed in an effort to promote environmentally responsible building, the council has a membership of over 3000 organizations, groups, and agencies. Members include contractors, builders, engineers, architects, consultants, product distributors and manufacturers, environmental interest groups, real estate groups, and local and state government agencies. They hold an annual Greenbuild convention and sponsor a federal summit where they meet with government leaders to promote environmentally friendly legislation for the building industry.

The USGBC's biggest program is Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). LEED's purpose is to promote the use of environmentally friendly materials and codes in building projects. Under the LEED program, a contractor or tradesman might have to meet strict environmental regulations as part of the specifications for the job. For example, the job might require that all adhesives used on the project itself or in building materials (plywood, cabinets, flooring) comply with California VOC limits; or that packaging for building articles be made of recycled or recyclable material. From a local prison construction job in North Carolina to a public housing development going up in Oregon, this program is impacting construction cost-to-coast.

Franklin International offers a complete line of products that will meet the criteria set forth in the LEED program. Franklin's product safety specialist, Amanda Thomas, is available to help you and your customers understand and comply with this new program. If you or your customers have any questions about green building or LEED, please feel free to contact your sales representative or Ms. Thomas (614-445-1506) for assistance.
